Migraine Treatment
The course of treatment for migraine headaches will depend entirely on the severity of your migraines and what treatments you prefer using. There are those migraine sufferers who will take any pill or any injection to relieve their symptoms and get rid of the pain. There are other who dislike the side effects that some migraine treatments can actually cause - the side effects almost outweighing the benefit of the treatment itself. I've found some prescription medicine would solve the migraine but leave me too exhausted to work for 24 hours at a time. Not good.
What Types Of Treatment Are Available?
So what treatments are available to you?
There are prophylactic treaments which need to be taken on an ongoing basis and will prevent a migraine ever occuring. This course of treatment can be quite expensive and you need specific medical advice before embarking on such a course of treatment.
Abortive medications allow you to eliminate the effects of a migraine once it has started.
Alternative Treatments
You can also look at the alternative and natural treatments available to you. These include relaxation treatment, massage, acupuncture, acupressure, laying in a dark room and aromatherapy or a combination of several of these.
Eating a healthier diet is also important. Drinking plenty of fresh water, eating fresh fruit and green vegetables and cutting down on smoking, alcohol and coffee will all help in reducing your risk of a migraine attack.
There are also the "mechanical" treatments such as TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation) which is a form of electrical acupuncture which stimulates certain nerve endings to provide medium and long term relief from migraines.
Knowing Your Triggers
A key part of any treatment regimen is knowing what triggers your migraines and making that a major aspect of treating your problem. If you know what your triggers are you can make migraines almost non-existent by eliminating these triggers from your life. At very worst you can reduce the number of migraines you have to suffer.
Many migraine sufferers are now taking an more holistic approach to treating their migraine headaches. They're combining modern pharmaceutical treatments like ibuprofen with aromatherapy and relaxation techniques to provide a healthier and more long lasting remedy to their migraine problem.
